BEER FACT #9
Mexico's First Brewery
Like early American breweries, Mexico's first breweries got their start and
influence from German emigrants in the mid 1800s. Mexico's oldest known brewery,
Victoria, began in 1865 as a craft brewery producing bock, pilsner and a
Vienna-style lager, which is still brewed today by its new owner, Modelo.
In the 1920s, when U.S. breweries were floundering, most Mexican breweries grew
substantially during America's prohibition era since Mexico legally
manufactured beer and Americans flocked across the border to consume it. ¡Salud!
